Ruby Creek is a rising indie-folk and alt-country band that has been captivating audiences with their harmonious sound and heartfelt lyrics. The trio consists of Nova Nastasia, 27, who plays the banjo and contributes as a singer and songwriter; Ben Paquette, 23, the lead guitarist and fellow singer-songwriter; and Riley Wilson, 27, the rhythm guitarist, singer, and songwriter. Each member brings a unique flair to the band, making their collaboration seamless and magical. 

Nova reflects on the band's formation, saying, "Forming this band was a natural process. I had these two friendships, one new and one that had blossomed a few years prior. They both inspired me musically, and there was always a possibility of creating together. Ben and Riley met a year ago before Ruby Creek’s first gig. It already feels like we have known each other for a lifetime."

Musical Background

Each member of Ruby Creek has a deep-rooted passion for music, cultivated from a young age. Nova was surrounded by music growing up, with a family steeped in country music traditions. She was influenced by artists like Johnny Cash, Tori Amos, and Black Sabbath, gravitating towards music with an element of darkness.

Riley, also from a musical household, found solace in songwriting after years in theatre and acting. Her influences range from Adrienne Lenker and Patti Smith to The Cranberries and T. Rex. "I’m interested in the murky parts of life and can’t help but explore them through music," Riley explains.

Ben’s musical journey started with his dad’s guitar playing and evolved as he discovered bands like Fleet Foxes and Bon Iver. Their melancholic indie-folk sound deeply resonated with him and shaped his approach to music and songwriting.

As a band, Ruby Creek's influences intersect uniquely, with Big Thief, Fleet Foxes, and Julia Jacklin being pivotal. Their genre blends indie-folk and alt-country, characterized by vocal harmony and intricate instrumentation, setting them apart from other bands.

Montreal Connections

Montreal has significantly influenced Ruby Creek’s music and identity. Nova moved to Montreal from New Brunswick in 2018, bringing her love for folk and country music. Inspired by local banjo players, she felt free to express herself authentically. 

Riley feels a strong connection to the city, inspired by its vibrant music scene and the success of local bands like Half Moon Run. Ben highlights the world-class folk music scene in Montreal, which has been instrumental in their growth as musicians.

Ruby Creek’s creative process is collaborative and organic. Nova, Riley, and Ben bring in song ideas and work together to develop them. Their method is experimental, often involving trying out different ideas until everything falls into place. "We trust the process and stick with what feels most authentic in the moment," says Nova.

Their songwriting is inspired by the human experience, exploring various themes and emotions through their music. With all three members contributing to writing, their songs offer a diverse range of perspectives.

Performances and Touring 

Ruby Creek’s live performances are known for their haunting yet sweet energy. They enjoy playing unplugged in Nova’s living room but relish the thrill of hearing their harmonies well-mixed during live shows. Their East Coast tour last summer was a bonding experience, solidifying their relationship as a band.

One of their highlights was opening for Ben Vallee’s album release at La Sala Rossa. They’ve also released four singles, recorded with a raw and intimate approach that reflects their genuine sound.
